Cheesecake showdown in Kuala Lumpur
This time around in Kuala Lumpur I luckily got the chance to meet the lovely duo from CumidanCiki. We had a lovely dinner with them and talked about important business- like cheesecake.
Where to find good cheesecake? I was officially on the hunt.
Our friends, who have so graciously hosted us each time we visited KL, suggested a place called Secret Recipe. But when I mentioned this to Ciki, she suggested another spot, saying THEY had the best cheesecake, called Su’s Cakes for Kicks. Both places were within walking distance to where we were staying, so before leaving KL, we decided to have a cheesecake showdown!!! (this obviously an excuse to let me stuff myself with cheesecake, all for a good cause!)
We began at Secret Recipe, which is a chain that has recently expanded to Australia.
Our 3 selections were:
The Verdict:
The portions were large, and the cheesecake creamy. The Chocolate Raspberry was cavity inducing sweet, causing Mike to abandon it halfway. There is such a thing as too sweet, I guess! My Strawberry Marshmallow was so-so. The Marshmallow part I ate in the beginning. Towards the end I took it off and just at the cheesecake part. I like pure cheesecake fatty goodness. Don’t ruin it with Marshmallow! But, it was good enough. Our friend Ali tasted the Green Tea, and she said it was delicate and had enough green tea flavor.
The only problem we had with Secret Recipe was the service took an eternity. We offered to order at the counter, which was denied as they seated us. The bloke that took our order came ’round to confirm it after 15 minutes- so easy to slice and serve, you think? Not really. We watched other people order and get served way before us. The cheesecake took almost 30 minutes. On service points alone we would not return.
Next stop was Su’s Cakes for Kicks!
We arrived a bit late to be seated so we had to take our order to go. The nice thing about Su’s was the samples- you could taste almost all the cheesecakes if you wanted to! And they were not stingy with the handouts. We loved this.
The cheesecakes were so tiny. I think I could have eaten 2 myself. Willpower! Wait, I have none.
The price was slight higher than Secret Recipe, but not too much. The portions are obviously smaller. I had high hopes for these tiny cheesecakes. Our Flavors: Durian, Lychee, & Blueberry.
I took the 3 cheesecakes from Su’s on the plane back to Chiang Mai and we ate them the next day.
The Verdict:
Although aesthetically perfect, these cheesecakes tasted like someone forgot to add the cream cheese to the cheesecake. Whoops. Mike and our cheesecake tasting friend Ali both had theirs first, and confirmed this. I ate mine last, and was truly disappointed. Maybe they just make their cheesecake a different way then we are used to, but it was not creamy at all. I could not figure out what it tasted like.
If you get to Kuala Lumpur, check out both of these places and give us your opinions! Do you like your cheesecake creamy? Sweet? Cream cheesy?
Here are the websites for the places we visited. They both have a few locations.

Oh wow – durian cheesecake? I’d die and gone to heaven if I could taste that.

Mike says the Durian part tasted great flavor wise. But the cheesecake was not rich.
So, I’m not a cheesecake fan at ALL, but damn. Those look like little morsels of heaven I would totally at least try!!

Tasting is ok yup!
Damned, I haven’t had good cheesecake for a long time, any good recommendations for cheesecake in Chiang Mai? Durian cheesecake just sounds wrong to me; why would you do that to a perfectly good cheesecake

You know I brought it back with me on the plane and I practically made him eat it on the balcony. It reeked.
