We’ll get to Crete one day
These days you can’t go somewhere without running into other travelers, and as it goes, you usually engage in friendly conversation on where they’ve been or where they’re going. That’s the beauty of meeting other backpackers-you never know where they will inspire you to travel to next.
Tales of African safaris, island hopping, diving with sharks, camping in the desert- the list is endless and every place sounds better than the last. I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with travel bloggers all over the globe and each one of them tells a different and unique perspective on a location through pictures and stories.
I’m in no rush to see the world- I know if I’m lucky I’ll get to where I need to be in due time. Certain places are on my list and Crete is one of them.
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and it has some impressive things to see, including the Samaria National Park in the city of Malia, a 14km gorge that descends 1250 meters to sea level through some of Europe’s most spectacular natural scenery.
I unfortunately had to miss out visiting Greece when I backpacked to Europe back in 2005 due to schedule conflicts, but this island looks gorgeous and I do love island hopping!
Malia is known as somewhat of a backpacker haven for British tourists but as so many places that are known to be touristy, I believe you can find a spot of quiet and relaxation if you just search for it.
Malia also has many significant archaeological sites and is definitely an interesting place for a visit. The palace of Malia, dating from the Middle Bronze Age, was destroyed by an earthquake during the Late Bronze Age. The palace was later rebuilt toward the end of the Late Bronze Age. Most of the ruins visible today date from this second period of construction.
Malia has become one of the most popular tourist locations of Crete, and one of the most popular in Europe, rivaling Ibiza and Magaluf.
The prominence of Malia as a hot spot for nightlife in Europe is impressive due to the attraction of big name DJs and events. The main strip is home to many bars, clubs, taverns and restaurants.
Malia sounds like a perfect mixture of history and modern fun. Check out archaeological sites by day, and at night I can let my hair down and dance, drink, and have a great time with some spectacular views.
Have you been to Crete? Tell me about your experience!
Tip: If you’re looking to travel to Malia, you should check out Malia holidays to see if you can save money on all inclusive deals or on hotel rooms.

I’m itching to visit Greece as well!
Me too! But its sooo not cheap. I’ll wait a while still!
I have an idea … lets go together!!

I need to make a whole bunch of money to get there. But I’d love to go with you
By the way the Samaria Gorge is on the south of the island whilst Malia is on the north coast near Heraklion. I spent two weeks on Crete some years back, hired a car and drove clockwise around the island. Has to be on of the best trips of my life. It is larger than it looks. Could have spent three weeks there.
Getting a car is so much fun! A good idea for Crete. Glad it was awesome for you.
