4 chicks take over Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is both the best and the least known of the Inca ruins. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors and archaeologists today can do no more than speculate on its function. The local Quechua farmers in the area knew of Machu Picchu for centuries, but it was not until an 11-year-old boy led the American historian Hiram Bingham (who was in search of Vilcabamba) to the site on July 24, 1911, that the rest of the world became aware of its existence.

At that time the site was covered in thick vegetation, and Bingham and his team returned in 1912 and 1915 to clear the growth. Over the years, much work has been done on excavating and studying the site. Despite these efforts, many unanswered questions remain…….Ok thats the mini-history lesson on Machu…

We awaken at 4am to shower and meet for an ‘early’ breakfast. I consider myself a breakfast champion, I can eat it anytime of the day. Including 4:45am. Lucy ,Jess and Kate stumble down looking beautiful but a bit worse for wear…Including the alcohol smell. Apparently late nite boozing. Climbing into the bus they immediately fall asleep like angels and I snap pictures from the bus. My night included going to sleep at midnight to be awakened first by the rooster at 3 then again at 4. Blah blah…the point of everything,….we arrive and its like wow. WOW. WOW!!!  Weren’t able to climb Wayna Picchu but not disturbed we decided to hike to the bridge and the across to the sun gate since we had a couple of ours. And those are the best memories I have.  I will never forget that day as long as I live. The four of us, talking, laughing, walking, and well, sweating and swearing, taking pictures along the whole way. Hearing the mountain gossip about the fellow that fell climbing Wayna Picchu this day and had some bones popping out of his calf and a gash in his forehead. Seeing the same fellow later on in the day (while having late lunch) being carried by on a stretcher down the railroad tracks. I swear you cant make this stuff up. I fucking love Peru. Enjoy the pictures.
