Having to say the most painful of goodbyes in Lima

Recalling this story still gives me heartburn.

Traveling through South America a few years back, we spent some time in Argentina’s wine region, Mendoza. Passing the days drinking wine and eating pasta, we burned off calories by hiking. As the days passed, we decided to amass a collection of wine bottles we would take home with us. We’d spend the rest of the year drinking it and remembering our time there.

Leaving Argentina, we flew to various other spots in South America, always bringing our wine as our carry on.

We were preparing to take our international flight out of Lima to Miami. Checking in, it didn’t even occur to me that I could not bring the wine as carry on. Bad move on my part.

The next hour can only be described as painful as I had to leave my beloved pack of wine behind. Confusion, a bad atm card, lack of time, and total idiotic behavior created a situation I would no longer be benefiting from. A waste of time and money.

Lesson learned here. Always make sure you know the airline regulations and buy cheap sweaters to muffle around your backpack so you don’t break all of your many bottles of wine from anywhere. Although I suspect I am not the only one who has a story like this.  Even using services at the airport like the plastic wrap can fail you if you can’t get the bag on the flight.

We’re considering an upcoming move to somewhere in Europe next year and I wonder if the carry on restrictions are more relaxed on flights between countries such as France and Italy. We could drive all around the countryside sampling wine then use airport parking  to let us fly back and forth. England and Spain, we could find wine tours everywhere. East Midlands airport parking and manchester airport car parking can also be helpful when deciding what airports to travel from in England.

Lets hear your stories, I know I am not the only one who had an off day of travel here. Who has had an epic experience at an airport?

What a wino hehe :) That’s good to know that you can’t bring wine as a carry on. I never realized that. Sorry you lost your wine. Hate all these dumb rules these days.
